WHITE SHEET CAMPAIGN: CALL FOR A RENT STRIKE AS OF APRIL 1, 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic has placed us in an unprecedented situation. Extreme social distancing and voluntary isolation measures have resulted in the closure of all non-essential businesses. This has already had a catastrophic impact on our livelihoods, rendering many of us unemployed overnight.

As it is, in normal times, countless people and small businesses struggle to make ends meet. The fact is clear: on April 1, many of us will simply not be able to pay our rent.

In response to this unique situation, we are calling for a decree to cancel all rent and mortgage payments as long as the State of Health Emergency remains in place.

We invite you to hang a white sheet in front of your homes to signify the pressing need for a rent truce.

In order to put pressure on our government, we invite tenants not to pay their rent on April 1st. We invite landlords to allow them to do so by negotiating the payment of their mortgage with their banks.

An exceptional situation calls for exceptional measures.

Despite the current suspension of eviction hearings at the Régie du logement, unpaid rent can lead to future consequences, including the termination of leases and evictions. This strike is taking place to prevent the most vulnerable from suffering these consequences. In these times as always, solidarity in numbers are our best weapon. So let us share widely!

Let us take care of our communities now.
